Signed underneath with incised and stained characters Chikuunsai kore o tsukuru 竹雲斎造之 (Made by Chikuunsai).  This basket is woven in a somewhat relaxed, informal technique that contrasts with the intricate hexagonal plaiting for which Chikuunsai II is better known. The shape, with its broad base and tall handle rising from around the middle of the sides, is of a type pioneered by the tea master Hisada Sōzen III (1647–1707).
